Before There Was Anything

No mountain and no morning, no sea, no stone, no shore, no star to hang in an empty sky, no sky at all. And you. Before there was anything, there was you. Before there was anything, there was you. You spoke, and there it stood. Your breath moved on the deep. You led the stars out one by one and called each one by name. You count them still. Not one is missing. Before there was anything, there was you. Before there was anything, there was you. You asked a man once, out of the storm: "Where were you when I laid the earth? Who stretched the line across it? Who set its cornerstone? Who shut the sea behind its doors and told the waves, this far?" And the morning stars sang out as one, and all your sons were shouting, every one of them shouting your name: Jehovah! Jehovah! Before there was anything, there was you! Before there was anything, there was you! You did not make it for nothing. You made it to be lived in. You looked at all you'd made, and it was very good. This ground under my feet tonight, you laid it down before I was. I look up, and your fingers are there in the moon, in every star. What am I, that you keep me in mind? Before there was anything, there was you. Before there was anything, there was you. From everlasting to everlasting, you....
